Jose Mourinho must change his approach to big away matches or risk ruining Manchester United’s title chances, Ian Wright has warned.
The Red Devils boss has been heavily criticised after his side’s performance against Liverpool at the weekend.
Manchester United set up defensively on Merseyside and managed to leave with a 0-0 draw. But they never looked likely to win, with just one shot on target during the entire match.
It was clear Mourinho was happy to pick up a point at Anfield. But Arsenal legend Wright says that approach is dangerous, with maximum points against so-called ‘lesser’ sides impossible to guarantee. The example of Chelsea’s shock 2-1 defeat to bottom-of-the-table Crystal Palace at the weekend a case in point.
‘What happens is if you’re going to start trying to pick the points that you’re going to get, and I think he [Mourinho] had a good opportunity to go to Liverpool and beat them, we saw what happened to Chelsea when you’re not on it. You can’t take anyone for granted in this league. You have to beat the teams with the form you’re going into the game with.’
Wright says Mourinho misjudged the situation, with Manchester United heading to Anfield in great form and questions being asked about Liverpool’s defensive capabilities.
‘They’re playing better this year, that’s what’s annoying for me,’ Wright told Sky Sports.
‘The Liverpool team they were playing, they would have been petrified by the offensive ability of them [Manchester United]. They would have been delighted to have not seen [Marcus] Rashford [in the starting XI].
‘I don’t think Manchester United should be going anywhere shutting up shop like that.’
