Martin Keown criticised Cesc Fabregas, Cesar Azpilicueta, David Luiz and Tiemoue Bakayoko following Chelsea’s entertaining 3-3 draw with Roma in the Champions League.

The reigning Premier League champions took an early lead through Brazil international Luiz and Eden Hazard doubled the hosts’ lead ten minutes before half-time.

Aleksandar Kolarov halved the deficit shortly after, however, before Edin Dzeko netted twice in six minutes to put the Serie A outfit in front.

Hazard rescued Chelsea’s unbeaten start to the Champions League group stage but Keown still claimed Antonio Conte’s side ‘looked lost’ as their wait for a victory continued.

And the former Arsenal and England defender was critical of a number of players, saying Azpilicueta was ‘running around chasing shadows’ while summer signing Bakayoko was a ‘passenger’.

‘There were problems all over the pitch,’ Keown told the Daily Mail. ‘Hazard and Morata were breathtaking on the break but defensively, Conte did not get much from the Belgian.

‘Cesc Fabregas looked lost in midfield and Cesar Azpilicueta was running around chasing shadows.

‘David Luiz was supposed to be the firefighter in midfield but he did not stop Diego Perotti from coming in from the left into a central position. In some games, Tiemoue Bakayoko has almost been a passenger.’

The high-scoring draw follows two consecutive defeats for Chelsea, who have slipped to fifth in the table and already find themselves nine points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

‘Chelsea are crying out for a De Bruyne or Silva who will dominate play,’ Keown added. ‘Conte needs to go back to the drawing board and assess whether this system is working.’

The Blues, who won the title by seven points last term, face Watford on Saturday before taking on Everton in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
