Jose Mourinho claims Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been dropped because he wants more ‘intensity’ from his Manchester United side.

The Armenia international has been criticised for his recent form after his sub-par displays in the goalless draw with Liverpool and the 1-0 win over Benfica in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.

For Saturday’s trip to Huddersfield Town, Mourinho made four changes to his side as Mkhitaryan was replaced by Jesse Lingard in midfield, while Anthony Martial started ahead of Marcus Rashford.

In defence, Victor Lindelof dropped to the bench in favour of Phil Jones, while Ashley Young took up a starting place at left-back ahead of Daley Blind.

‘There are four changes in the team to try to give a bit of fresh legs and intensity,’ said Mourinho.

‘We have experience and our motivation is to try to win the game.’
