Jurgen Klopp is ‘as low as he’s been’ after Liverpool were thrashed 4-1 by Tottenham at Wembley, according to Graeme Souness.

Liverpool’s defensive frailties were once again exposed as a Harry Kane double and goals from Son Heung-min and Dele Alli gave Spurs an emphatic win.

Klopp was understandably dejected after the display and Souness felt the German boss had reached his lowest point while in the Anfield hot-seat.

‘That’s as low as I’ve seen him,’ Souness told Sky Sports. ‘It’s a very difficult part of being a manager, he wants to cane [Dejan] Lovren but he can’t.

‘At this level, you’re only as strong as your weakest link. Lovren was that for Liverpool today.’

Former Liverpool and England midfielder Jamie Redknapp added: ‘They’ve conceded 15 goals away from home this season, when they go away from home they’re wide open, it’s mistake after mistake. The personnel is not good enough.’

Klopp admitted the defeat in north London was self-inflicted after Spurs punished Liverpool’s shambolic defensive performance to move level on points with second-placed Manchester United.

‘Of course, the whole game, result, was all out fault,’ he said. ‘They needed to be good but we made it much too easy for them.’

On whether he can turn things around at Anfield with Liverpool dropping to ninth in the Premier League table, Klopp said: ‘Of course we can, now we have to realise that we are responsible for this. We can fix it, we have to fix it.’

Souness, meanwhile, insisted Liverpool face an uphill task of finishing in the top four this season, with Klopp’s side continuously conceding ‘daft goals’.

‘I would take that right now and I think Klopp would,’ he said. ‘He must be worried, leaking daft goals.

‘It drains the confidence in the team. If someone is asleep [in defence], you’re trying to push water up a hill.’
