Mesut Ozil ‘would not last long’ at Old Trafford if he leaves Arsenal to join Manchester United, according to Mikael Silvestre.

Germany international Ozil has entered the final year of his contract at the Emirates and is still no nearer to agreeing terms over a new deal.

The 29-year-old made a poor start to the 2017-18 campaign but put in a dazzling display in Sunday’s 5-2 thrashing over Everton.

Manchester United have been linked with a move for Ozil but Silvestre, who played for both United and Arsenal, doubts Jose Mourinho needs a player of his profile.

And the former France defender is adamant Ozil would need to improve his attitude and work-rate if he did find himself at United under Mourinho.

Speaking to beIN Sports, Silvestre said: ‘I think he would have to change his attitude. I think it’s mainly when the team loses the ball.

‘The first few seconds in reaction – that’s when the coaches want you to get up and try to recover as quickly as possible. Be that man to block and try to stop your opponent.

‘And his transitions sometimes, he looks like “okay we lost the ball now and I’ve got to run back now because I’m Arsenal”, but sometimes it doesn’t look like he is interested, so at United he wouldn’t last long – especially with Jose [Mourinho].’

Silvestre cannot see where Ozil would fit in at Old Trafford, given Mourinho already has two similar players in Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata.

‘If you put players into categories, I would put him in the with Mkhitaryan and Mata, so you already have two players like this,’ the 40-year-old added.

‘Technical, good vision, proper playmakers. So why would you sign another? You don’t need to pile these types of players.’

Martin Keown questioned whether Ozil was playing for a move with his masterclass at Everton but Arsene Wenger said his performance showed he intended to stay at Arsenal.

Speaking after the emphatic win, the French boss said: ‘We live in an environment where we have to deal with the news and the players and myself have only always one response, which is what’s happening on the football pitch.

‘When you see Mesut on the football pitch like he is today, enjoying his game like he is today, it’s difficult to believe these kind of things.

‘He was superb. Agile, quick, intelligent. Always at the service of the team with his quality of his passing and when he is at that level, he is an exceptional football player.’
