Two former Manchester United players have expressed an interest in managing Everton and could become embroiled in a showdown to succeed Ronald Koeman.

The Toffees are seeking a new manager after yesterday sacking Koeman following a poor start to the season. After losing 5-2 to Arsenal at the weekend the club find themselves in the relegation zone.

Manchester United legends Ryan Giggs and Phil Neville are both understood to be keen on the role.

Giggs has been looking for a managerial role since leaving his job as assistant at Old Trafford when Jose Mourinho arrived at the club.

Speaking about the vacancies at Everton and Leicester, the 43-year-old Welshman told Sky Sports: ‘For me these are clubs I would be interested in.

‘I think you look at those two teams, Leicester being champions two seasons ago, Everton being a fantastic club with a fantastic history.

‘However, there are a lot of coaches out there who would be interested in those positions.’

It turns out one of those coaches is his former team-mate Neville.

The BBC report that the former Valencia assistant manager, who made more than 250 appearances for Everton during eight years at the club, would be keen.

The 40-year-old, who has expressed an interest in the role in the past, is currently working as a pundit.

While the Class of ’92 graduates could battle each other for the job, there will be others in the frame. Burnley manager Sean Dyche, former Bayern Munich coach Carlo Ancelotti and Everton Under-23s manager David Unsworth are thought to be in contention.
