Sergio Romero proved once again he’s among the best back-up goalkeepers in the business with an outstanding performance in Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat of Swansea City in the Carabao Cup.

Jesse Lingard stole the headlines at the Liberty Stadium but it was Jose Mourinho’s defence which laid the foundations as the Red Devils look to defend the competition they won last term.

Mourinho reserved special praise for Chris Smalling and Romero after the victory and one particular stat from the 30-year-old shot-stopper caught the eye at half-time.

With United cruising in the south of Wales, the Argentinian completed as many dribbles (1) as the entire Swansea starting XI in the opening 45 minutes of the clash.

After the match, Mourinho told Sky Sports: ‘They [Swansea] have a good squad, have a squad with lots of options, no difference between players.

‘But we were really comfortable, the attitude was good. I think Romero and Smalling gave us big stability, [I’m] really happy, it was quite comfortable, no injuries so it was a good day for us.’

United supporters heaped praise on David De Gea’s understudy after the game…
