Ander Herrera believes Tottenham Hotspur are capable of winning the Champions League this season and insists they will rival Manchester United on both a domestic and European front.

The Spaniard is set to line-up against Mauricio Pochettino’s side on Saturday lunchtime, with both teams desperate for a win to keep the pressure up on Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

Both teams trail Pep Guardiola’s outfit by five points and should City beat West Bromwich Albion, it guarantees at least on of the two frontrunners to catch them will lose ground on their title charge.

After two fine seasons under Pochettino, Herrera is under no illusions about how strong this Tottenham side is and knows United are in for a tough battle at Wembley this weekend.

And he insists that Spurs’ recent performance against Real Madrid proved exactly how good they are and that they could secure a surprising Champions League win.

‘Tottenham are a direct rival every season,’ the Spaniard said.

‘In the last two or three years they have improved a lot and they are contenders for everything; the Champions League, for both cups and for the league.

‘We saw the game they played with Real Madrid and they were not worse than them.

‘So that means they are ready for anything. It will be a big statement if we beat them.’
