Aston Villa, West Brom and Leicester are plotting audacious moves to lure Michael Carrick away from Manchester United after the midfielder’s frustrating start to the season, reports claim.

The former England international has played just one game all season against Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup and the 36-year-old is growing increasingly isolated.

After joining the club from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006 for £18million, Carrick has won an impressive five Premier League titles, three League Cups, the FA Cup, the Europa League and the Champions League in an immensely successful spell at Old Trafford.

But his final year at the club could end in disaster.

The former Spurs midfielder has recently been sidelined through injury and, while he’s not plotting an exit, he is keen for more game time.

And Villa, West Brom and Leicester are all monitoring his situation ahead of a move, according to the Mirror.

The arrival of Nemanja Matic in the summer has seen the ex-Chelsea star establish himself at the heart of Manchester United’s midfield, with Paul Pogba, Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera all likely to be favoured ahead of Carrick.

With youngster Scott McTominay also impressing Jose Mourinho and his staff, Carrick may find his opportunities even more limited and the three Midlands sides are hoping to lure him away.
