Alvaro Morata picked out three key factors that convinced him to join Chelsea in the summer, as he prepares for a first Champions League clash in Italy since a £70million move to Stamford Bridge.

The Chelsea forward admitted he would prefer to live in Italy, after loving his time with Juventus, and insisted he would never have left the Serie A champions had he not been obliged to by Real Madrid.

With his wife preferring a stay in Spain, Morata reached a ‘compromise’ by moving to London, linking up with former Juventus boss Antonio Conte.

The 25-year-old has since scored six goals in his first eight Premier League starts and has put in some impressive performances at Stamford Bridge.

And Morata explained that he had been convinced to join by the chance to link-up with Conte again, the presence of a Spanish core in the Chelsea squad and his wife’s approval.

‘There were a number of favourable situations,’ he told Gazzetta dello Sport ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League clash with Roma.

‘The first was the coach: I knew Conte and I had no trouble finding myself in his football ideas.

‘The second is the environment: I was very well received by my companions. The presence of a Spanish enclave, with Azplicueta, Alonso, Fabregas and Pedro, made things simpler.

‘The third is my wife Alice Campello: she followed me to London.’
