Jose Mourinho has launched a staunch defence of Romelu Lukaku following criticism from some sections of Manchester United’s supporters.

The striker drew a blank at the weekend against Tottenham and there were groans at some of his contributions in the 1-0 win at Old Trafford.

It extended the Belgian’s goalless streak to five games following a stunning start to his Manchester United career.

But despite failing to find the back of the net, Mourinho says the ‘untouchable’ striker offers much more and should command the respect of the fans.

‘The fans are the fans and I told them they paid tickets and are free to express themselves the way they want. My job is to protect my players when they deserve it.

‘Romelu is one of the players who should be untouchable in terms of respect from everyone.

‘There’s not one that hit the post or is saved by the opposition goalkeeper that can make Romelu’s contribution below top level. He’s playing extremely well.’

Mourinho continued: ‘I must protect them when they deserve it and Romelu always deserves it. What he does for the team is fantastic.

‘To play football as a striker not just about scoring goals. He’s untouchable in my team and I think in terms of support from the fans.

‘But they pay their ticket and do what they want.’

Mourinho’s latest comments come after he criticised some Manchester United supporters over their treatment of Lukaku in the immediate aftermath of the game.

Mourinho was talking ahead of his side’s meeting with Benfica tomorrow in which they can solidify their path to the knock-out phase of the competition.
