Chelsea forward Alvaro Morata has revealed he was in talks with Antonio Conte over a move to the club last spring.

The Spaniard was close to joining Manchester United in the summer before the Red Devils gazumped Chelsea by agreeing a £75million move for Romelu Lukaku.

Morata had agreed personal terms with the Red Devils but Chelsea moved quickly once Lukaku opted for Old Trafford by agreeing a £70m deal for Morata.

However, Morata insists his move to Stamford Bridge was down to his relationship with Conte and he has revealed the Italian was in contact over a move as far back as last spring.

‘We started talking about my eventual transfer last spring and I finally came to London,’ said Morata.

‘I’m in debt with Conte. He had taken me for Juventus and then left for Italy. When I knew he wanted me, I didn’t think twice.’

Morata is expected to start in Chelsea’s clash against Roma in Italy on Wednesday.

The Spaniard played against Roma on five occasions during his two years with Juventus but failed to score against Eusebio Di Francesco’s side.
