Michael Carrick is set to snub a January move away from Manchester United as he looks to fight for his place under Jose Mourinho, reports claim.

The 36-year-old has made just one appearance for the Red Devils this season and has attracted interest from Midlands’ outfits Aston Villa, Leicester City and West Bromwich Albion.

The trio made enquiries about his availability after seeing him only feature against Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup last month, while illness and injury have kept him sidelined.

But Carrick is keen to stay at Old Trafford and Mourinho is more than willing to keep him, according to ESPN.

Mourinho has favoured Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera at the heart of the Manchester United midfield but still values Carrick’s leadership and experience.

The former England international is also currently working alongside the club’s under-14s in order to gain his coaching badges as he plans ahead for retirement.
