Ian Wright could not resist the chance to remind Tottenham fans of the glory days he enjoyed at Arsenal when asked about Spurs’ much-anticipated Champions League clash with Real Madrid.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side welcomed Champions League and La Liga champions Real to their temporary Wembley home on Wednesday night, two weeks after clinching a point in the reverse fixture at the Bernabéu.

Wright insisted he was happy to be covering the match in the BBC 5 live studio rather than at the ground, as he ‘broke too many Spurs hearts’ during his playing career, something he is ‘very proud of’.

‘Unfortunately not,’ Wright said when asked whether he wished he was at Wembley to see Tottenham take on Real Madrid.

‘It’s Spurs… Just to get in there, the journey in and then walking through would be quite a task for me.

‘If it didn’t go well for me [during my career] I would probably walk in there no problem but actually I broke too many Spurs hearts – it’s something I’m very proud of.’

Former England striker Wright joined Arsenal from Crystal Palace in 1991 and would become one of the Gunners’ most prolific strikers in history.

Scoring 128 goals in 221 league games, Wright remains Arsenal’s second highest goalscorer of all time. The talisman won the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup during his seven-year spell at Highbury.
