Jack Wilshere was accused of mugging his team-mate Ainsley Maitland-Niles on Thursday night – and failing to make it pay.

During the 0-0 Europa League meeting between Arsenal and Red Star Belgrade at the Emirates, the Gunners were desperately seeking a goal in the second half.

Maitland-Niles showed strength to hold off a defender and create space for himself inside the box.

The youngster, who has never scored for Arsenal, took a touch and was readying a shot. But Wilshere had other ideas.

The midfielder, who overlooked for the latest England squad, nicked the ball of Maitland-Niles and then dinked a shot at goal.

Having beaten the goalkeeper Wilshere’s selfish play appeared to have been vindicated, only for a Red Star defender to hook the ball off the line.

Some Arsenal fans thought Wilshere was bang out of order.

The chance for Wilshere was the best of the match, but despite only drawing Arsenal progressed to the knock-out phase of the competition.
