Alavaro Morata has revealed his Chelsea teammates warned him not to choose the club’s cursed No.9 shirt when he signed for the club.

The Spain international made a hugely encouraging start to his Chelsea career, scoring eight goals in his first nine matches, but he has now gone six games without a goal since he recovered from a hamstring injury.

Upon signing from Real Madrid for a club-record £58million, Morata explained he was begged not to follow in the footsteps of expensive flops Chirs Sutton, Mateja Kezman, Fernando Torres and Radamel Falcao.

Morata told FourFourTwo: ‘That was one of the first things I was told after turning up here. Even the lads were begging me not to take that shirt because it was cursed, but I wanted it.

‘I’ve done a couple of little things to avoid the bad luck that the shirt supposedly brings.

‘Can I tell you what I’ve done? No chance. If I did that, the curse will come back!’
