Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Marcos Rojo are all in contention to make their Manchester United first team returns against Newcastle on Saturday, Jose Mourinho has confirmed.

United’s pursuit of Premier League leaders Manchester City has been hampered in recent weeks as a result of injuries to several of his key players, with Mourinho’s side having lacked the fluency and potency that characterised their early season form ever since Pogba limped out of of his side’s 3-0 win over Basel in the Champions League on September 12.

Asked specifically which players with long-term injuries are set to return against the Magpies, Mourinho said: ‘Pogba, Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo.’

The France international returned to first team training earlier this month and is now in line to take up his place in United’s engine room for the visit of Rafa Benitez’s side.

Ibrahimovic, meanwhile, has been out of action ever since he suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury against Anderlecht in the quarter final of last season’s Europa League and has undergone a painstaking rehabilitation process.

The veteran Swede, who triggered an option to sign a one-year contract extension back in August, is back well ahead of schedule and will now vie with the club’s record signing Romelu Lukaku for a first team place.

Rojo also suffered a serious knee injury back in April but came through 45 minutes of a reserve team game against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday unscathed.
