Jose Mourinho says his side can make ‘real progress’ in the next few weeks – if Manchester United fans get behind the team.

The 54-year-old was critical of United fans after the club’s 1-0 win against Tottenham in October and fans jeered when Mourinho opted to remove Marcus Rashford when the game was goalless.

United have lost two of their last three Premier League matches and find themselves eight points behind Manchester City ahead of their clash with Newcastle United at teatime.

Six of United’s next eight matches are at Old Trafford and Mourinho says the side can build momentum if supporters get behind them.

‘We will always do better when you play with us,’ Mourinho wrote in tonight’s programme notes.

‘So if you get behind the boys, they can make some real progress over the coming weeks.

‘This is a time when we can build momentum as we work towards our aims.’

With Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcoso Rojo all potentially returning from injury today United fans should have plenty to sing about.

Pogba is expected to start against the Magpies, while Rojo and Ibrahimovic could take a place on the bench.
