Arsene Wenger heaped praise on Mesut Ozil after the midfielder’s outstanding performance in Arsenal’s 5-0 thumping of Huddersfield.

The Gunners flew out of the blocks at the Emirates, with Alexandre Lacazette breaking the deadlock in the 3rd minute after a sensational assist from Aaron Ramsey.

Huddersfield kept Arsenal at bay until the 68th minute as Olivier Giroud doubled the home side’s lead via Ozil’s assist – and the German was just getting started against David Wagner’s men.

In an incredible four-minute spell, Ozil had a hand in goals from Giroud and Alexis Sanchez before scoring his own in the 72nd minute.

‘Ozil is a great football player, but he shows as well at the moment he can fight,’ Wenger told the media following the win.

‘We started well but then we lost our focus and our passing and allowed them to come back into the game.

‘Then we got the second goal and suddenly everyone played with more freedom and more technical quality – then Mesut Ozil showed what he can do’

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s clash with Manchester United, Wenger wants more urgency from his side across the 90 minutes.

He said: ‘I was not pleased with everything. we started well but lost the urgency in our a game a bit.

‘We gave them one or two chances.

‘But once we scored the second we played with freedom, drive and creativity.’
