Jose Mourinho has fuelled speculation surrounding Manchester United’s interest in Mesut Ozil by failing to rule out a move for the Arsenal midfielder.

The Germany international is yet to agree a new contract with Arsene Wenger’s side and will be available as a free agent next summer if he refuses to sign a new deal.

Wenger has admitted that Arsenal could be open to offers for Ozil in January, although earlier this week, the 68-year-old backtracked by insisting that the 29-year-old will not be sold in the upcoming window.

When asked on Friday if United would be interested in signing Ozil as a free agent next summer, Mourinho smirked and replied: ‘No comment.’

When asked about Ozil’s decision to run down his contract at Arsenal, Mourinho replied: ‘That’s football.

‘Marouane Fellaini finishes his contract. There are other players in Europe, important players in other teams, they finish their contract.

‘Sometimes players they decide to go in this direction, which is a right that they have.

‘They gamble, because imagine if one of these players has a big injury. Then probably next season he is without a club, but players have the right to do that.

‘I don’t blame the clubs. The clubs they try, but the players have the right to go into this situation and in the end many times, it’s good for them.

‘Sometimes they go on a free transfer and can get huge salaries. Other times, the clubs to keep them, they make extra effort and offer very high salaries.’
