Frank Lampard claims a heated confrontation between Jose Mourinho and Paul Pogba caused the Manchester United midfielder to ‘lose his head’ against Arsenal.

The France international was given his marching orders for a dangerous tackle on Hector Bellerin late in the second half and will now be suspended for his side’s next three domestic matches, including next weekend’s crucial Manchester derby at Old Trafford.

Minutes before his dismissal Pogba, who created goals for Antonio Valencia and Jesse Lingard in an impressive 3-1 win, was involved in an animated discussion with his manager and Lampard is sure the conversation was still playing on his mind when he launched into a horrendous challenge on the Spain international.

‘He was very heated and I’m of the opinion that if a manager gives you a message in a game you accept it as a player,’ former Chelsea star Lampard told BT Sport.

‘You can talk about it in the dressing room afterwards – you don’t need to throw arms as he does here.

‘Considering he got the red card a few minutes afterwards I think he got emotional I think he lost his head.

‘It wasn’t a tackle he needed to make. You’re leading 3-1, you’re protecting a lead and you understand the importance of the game and I think it’s affected his approach to the tackle.’

As well as the top of the table clash with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, Pogba will also miss the Premier League matches against Bournemouth and West Brom but will be eligible for United’s midweek Champions League clash against CSKA Moscow.
