Tottenham have told Manchester United they will sell Danny Rose in the January transfer window if they receive an offer that matches their demands, according to reports.

The left-back ignited the possibility of leaving the north London club in the summer when he gave a controversial interview in which he slammed the club’s transfer policy and expressed a desire to return to the north of England in the future.

He was subsequently fined by Tottenham, though his relationship with the club – and manager Mauricio Pochettino – still appears to be strained.

He was left out of the team entirely for the north London derby defeat to Arsenal, revealing afterwards that he was ‘fuming’ not to be involved, though both player and manager played down fears of a bust up.

Nevertheless, rumours linking him with Old Trafford continued to swirl and now the Sunday Star say Spurs have changed their stance and will allow him to join United – if they receive an offer of £45 million.

Rose was arguably the best left-back in the Premier League last season, though Ben Davies has performed admirably for the north Londoners in his absence this season.

As a result, Pochettino is willing to get by with his existing options if a mammoth offer is made, having also allowed right-back Kyle Walker to move to Manchester with table-toppers City in the summer.

That £50m fee briefly made Walker the most expensive defender in history, until Benjamin Mendy joined in a £52m deal a few weeks later, and Rose’s move see him slot in to third place.

The 27-year-old has been used only sparingly after returning from a knee injury that had kept him sidelined since the end of January, though started in the Champions League win away to Borussia Dortmund.

Mourinho is known to want a new left-back who can also play further forward as a wing-back, having used Ashley Young there this season, and appears to have lost all faith in Luke Shaw.
