Ryan Bertrand somehow recovered from the worst throw-in EVER (Picture: BT Sport)

Southampton star Ryan Bertrand was named man of the match for his impressive performance against Bournemouth, but the award was almost stripped away from him at the death.

The 28-year-old England defender produced possibly the worst throw-in in Premier League history during the 91st minute of the Dean Court clash on Sunday afternoon.

Bournemouth’s home support obviously gave Bertrand an earful for the blunder – but the Saints man recovered with some incredible quick-thinking in the dying moments of the 1-1 draw.

Bertrand pointed at his wrist, insinuating that the error was intentional in order to waste a few more seconds towards the end of the match.

Pep Guardiola, of course, accused Southampton’s players of time-wasting during Manchester City’s 2-1 victory at the Etihad last weekend.

Well played, Ryan. Well played.

Asked about Southampton’s draw at Dean Court, Bertrand told Sky Sports: ‘We can’t afford to start that slow against Bournemouth, but in the second half we looked the better team.

‘We had an up and down start to the season, but have managed to fix that with some consistency now.

‘We would have got the win if… I didn’t have two left feet.’
