Three Manchester United stars made it onto the top 10 list of the most mentioned athletes on Twitter in 2017.

UFC icon Conor McGregor, the biggest pay-per-view draw in MMA history, is number one on the list following his record-breaking boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr. back in August.

Red Devils trio Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku and Jose Mourinho finish second, third and fourth respectively, while United legend Wayne Rooney is placed sixth off the back of his summer move to Everton.

Unsurprisingly, McGregor’s victorious opponent, Mayweather, is fifth on the list, but it may come as a surprise that Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo finish as low as seventh and eighth respectively this year.

Premier League stars Philippe Coutinho and Arsene Wenger, representing Liverpool and Arsenal, complete the list of names.

Coutinho was linked with a sensational move to Barcelona in the summer transfer window so it’s perhaps no shock that he was among the most talked about athletes.

Gunners boss Wenger, meanwhile, has polarised supporters for years and his decision to remain at the Emirates for the 2017/18 campaign was the subject of endless debate in the summer.
