Jose Mourinho has promised Luke Shaw he will get another chance to resurrect his Manchester United career after he made an encouraging first team return against CSKA Moscow in the Champions League.

The former Southampton left-back, who was making only his third appearance of the season and his first start since April, impressed as United secured the 2-1 victory which ensured they qualified for the knockout stages as group winners.

Shaw’s Old Trafford future looked to be in jeopardy following the return to fitness of Marcos Rojo, Ashley Young’s renaissance and the speculation which continues to link Danny Rose with a move from Tottenham.

Rose has struggled to win over Mauricio Pochettino since he questioned the club’s transfer strategy in the summer and was left out of the matchday squad for last month’s north London derby despite claiming he had recovered from injury and was ready to play.

Reports last week claimed Jose Mourinho was growing increasingly confident of completing a £50million deal next month for the unsettled Tottenham defender but regardless of a move for Rose, it appears he may be having second thoughts about Shaw’s long-term future.

‘It was a very positive performance especially with the ball going forwards. He was really dangerous creating a lot and there was great intensity in his game.

‘There was no surprise after 80 minutes he’s feeling the consequences of that the intensity, it’s normal in the first match of the season for him.

‘But he was deserving of that opportunity for quite a long time and he’s going to get more because the performance was really positive.’
