There is only one way Manchester City could throw away the title after beating Manchester United, says Graeme Souness.

Pep Guardiola’s side dominated at Old Trafford on Sunday and won the Manchester derby 2-1.

David Silva opened the scoring before the visitors were pegged back by a Marcus Rashford goal. The winner came from Nicolas Otamendi, who hooked in during the second half.

The result means Manchester City have extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table to 11 points – a lead many believe is insurmountable.

Former Liverpool player and manager Souness is among them – but he did offer a glimmer of hope for the chasing pack including reigning champions Chelsea. And that is to hope for an injury crisis at the Etihad.

‘Gulf in class,’ he told Sky Sports. ‘No one comes here and has an easy ride so don’t underestimate that. I played in a team that was dominant in European football, we never got an easy game here. We never came here and played like that.

‘You’re thinking, what could happen going forward, where could they come unstuck? The only thing that might stop them winning the league is De Bruyne and Silva going out and having months out of the team. They are so important.

‘We normally talk about those two as the maestros who create things but both of them really put in a shift in today.

‘It’s scary for the rest hoping to catch them.’
