Jamie Carragher has insisted Sadio Mane was within his rights to shoot rather than pass the ball when Liverpool broke on Everton.

Mane had the opportunity to put it on a plate for three of his Liverpool team-mates late on in the second half.

It would have put Liverpool 2-0 up against their local rivals, but Mane opted to shoot and dragged the effort well wide.

Liverpool fans were raging with Mane’s decision-making, but Carragher was far less harsh on the Reds attacker.

‘Mane should have passed the ball,’ Carragher admitted on Sky Sports.

‘The brilliant thing mid-week was the unselfishness. I don’t think it’s a case of Mane being selfish, I think he thinks that’s the better thing (to do).

‘That’s the problem Everton have now, they have to push up.’

Liverpool were all over Everton in the opening 45 minutes, but they needed a bit of magic from Mohamed Salah to break the deadlock.

Salah’s superb curling effort fired the Reds in front and him back to the top of the Premier League scoring charts.

It is the Egyptian’s 19th goal of the season and Salah’s 13th of the league campaign.
