Olivier Giroud insisted that Arsenal were lacking a lack of presence in the box before he came onto the pitch and snatched a late equaliser against Southampton.

The France international rose highest to nod home an Alexis Sanchez in the 88th minute to cancel out Charlie Austin’s early strike but Arsenal will be frustrated with their poor defensive display.

Southampton could have been several goals up before Giroud came off the bench to grab a draw and match former Manchester United Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s record for most Premier League goals as a substitute for one club.

But the Frenchman believes Arsenal lacked enough players getting into the box as he fixed that problem late on.

‘I was trying to bring something for the team when I come on the pitch,’ he said after the draw.

‘Today we missed a bit of players in the box so I tried to bring it. It was a good cross from Alexis. I try to be in the right place at the right time. It’s nice to come back, since the beginning of the second half we were pushing and pushing.
