Manchester United’s official account responded to Toni Kroos over the midfielder’s Paul Scholes tweet which sent fans into meltdown on Monday night.

During a Twitter Q&A, the Real Madrid superstar was asked for his opinion on the age-old Scholes vs Steven Gerrard vs Frank Lampard debate – and his answer delighted United supporters.

Kroos, who has been linked with with a transfer move to Old Trafford for years, insisted that Scholes was the greatest English midfielder of his generation.

David Moyes recently revealed that the Red Devils had agreed an initial deal to sign the German back in 2014, but the move fell through.

So when United’s official Twitter account replied to Kroos’ tweet with a photograph of Scholes on Tuesday afternoon it sent fans into a frenzy.

United’s message was met with countless ‘get him’ and ‘sign him up’ responses from the club’s followers. I mean, what were they expecting?

Jose Mourinho is understood to be scouring the market for reinforcements ahead of the January transfer window, but Kroos is thought to be an unrealistic target at present.

Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil, who is out of contract at the Emirates next summer, is believed to be the Red Devils’ priority target in midfield.

Scholes admitted earlier this year that he based his game on Kroos in the latter stages of his Old Trafford career.

‘Kroos is the best midfield passer in the world,’ he said.

‘Towards the end of my career, I tried to emulate him.’
