Jose Mourinho has ordered Manchester United to re-sign Jonny Evans, according to reports.

The former Red Devil was sold by Louis van Gaal, but his performances for West Brom have sparked transfer rumours he could join Arsenal or Manchester City this January.

Mourinho views the sale of Evans as a major misstep by Van Gaal and the United boss is desperate to beat Arsenal and City to his signature.

The Mirror claim United are ready to fight off competition from Arsenal and City who are preparing bids for Evans.

The Premier League pair failed in moves for Evans in the summer, but have been keeping tabs on the defender.

Evans has continued to impress for club and country and travels to face his old side United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Northern Ireland international came through United’s youth ranks and made 198 appearances for the Red Devils.

It is believed West Brom are open to Evans departing in January if a side meets their £30million asking price.

United are in need of a centre-back after it was confirmed Eric Bailly would miss the rest of 2017 through injury.

Bailly is expected to spend at least three months on the sidelines, prompting Mourinho to dip into the winter transfer market.

City too need a defender after Vincent Kompany joined John Stones in the treatment room.
