Arsenal reaction: Arsene Wenger on why Alexis Sanchez took a while to hit form

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says Alexis Sanchez’s exploits at the Copa America inhibited his performances in the early stages of this season.

The Chilean hit a hat-trick to help the Gunners beat Leicester City 5-2 on Saturday afternoon and end his goal-scoring drought.

Wenger was pleased with Arsenal’s attacking display at the King Power Stadium and thinks his side are close to reaching top form.

“I feel our technical quality and the pace on the counter-attacks gave them problems,” said Wenger.

“In the end we controlled the game quite well in the second half. For a while we created the biggest number of shots in the league but couldn’t score the number of goals so I felt one day it would work and today it came off.

“Alexis was down recently because he couldn’t score anymore, he’s not used to that. I think it took him a while to recover from the Copa America that they won so to come back to such a competitive edge, it takes a while.”
