‘He has to change his football brain’ – Luke Shaw criticised by Jose Mourinho again despite return to action for Manchester United

Jose Mourinho has told Luke Shaw he has to 'change his football brain' to have a Manchester United future.

After being left out of United's squad over the weekend following stinging public criticism by his boss, Shaw returned to the 18 against Everton on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old made a key contribution after coming on in the 65th minute, winning a penalty in stoppage time which Zlatan Ibrahimovic converted to rescue a 1-1 draw.

Mourinho declared himself pleased with Shaw's display, but warned the young full-back he has major improvements to make.

"He was in front of me and I was making every decision for him," said Mourinho. "He has to change his football brain.

"He had a good performance but it was his body with my brain.

"We need at this level the fantastic body he has to play football, the fantastic physical qualities he has, the very good technical ability he has - but he cannot play with my understanding of the game.

"He must understand the game, he must think, and he must accelerate the process.

"Twenty-one years old is old enough to have a better understanding of the game - but his contribution was good.

"He goes today in a positive feeling because his performance was very positive. I'm happy with what he gave us."

United's last-gasp equaliser against Everton extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to 20 games.

But it was their ninth stalemate at home this season - the most in the top flight - and Mourinho admitted his players were struggling for confidence.
