Injured Cech to miss Champions League clash but Terry will start, confirms Mourinho

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed Petr Cech will be unavailable for Wendesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Atletico Madrid, but insists captain John Terry will start.

Both men were thought to be out for the remainder of the season after picking up injuries in the first leg, which ended in a 0-0 draw.

Cech was forced off after just 20 minutes in Madrid after dislocating his shoulder, while Terry was later forced off with an ankle problem.

But the Blues men were both present in the team’s group training session ahead of Wednesday’s clash at Stamford Bridge, in what Mourinho described as a “show of togetherness.”

And while the boss confirmed Terry has recovered sooner than expected and will start the crunch tie, he admitted the goalkeeper, who was named in the PFA’s Team of the Year this week, will not be available.

"Everybody's ready and Cech is ready and that's the message we wanted to give," Mourinho said. "Everybody was on the pitch.

“It's a very important match for our group. Everybody's together, everybody wants to help, everybody wants to play.

"His condition doesn't allow him to play, but the message was from him and the group."

Cech and Terry were also joined in training by Eden Hazard [calf] and Samuel Eto'o [knee], who could return after recent absences.

The Blues skipper admitted he feared the worst when he went off midway through the second half of the first match, forcing him out of the trip to Anfield, but now he is fit and raring to go.

"After I went down, I knew it was something a bit more serious," the 33-year-old said.

"After the game I wasn't feeling great about it and the scan told me it wasn't great.

"Myself and the physios gave it everything over the weekend and on the Sunday I went out and trained with the boys who stayed back from the Liverpool game.

"I did a full session on Monday and again on Tuesday, and touch wood I've had no reaction.

"There's nothing bigger than the Champions League and I'm always determined."
