Matic’s kit, phone calls, but no party: Chelsea's cup celebrations

Chelsea didn't have long to celebrate winning their first trophy since the return of Jose Mourinho as manager - but they made sure they marked the triumph in style.

From Mourinho phoning his wife, to Nemanja Matic donning the full kit despite being suspended for his retaliation to a tackle by Burnley's Ashley Barnes last week, we look at the Stamford Bridge outfit's League Cup celebrations.

Matic in full kit

There was no one missing out on the post match celebrations at Wembley as even the suspended Nemanja Matic appeared on the pitch in his full Chelsea kit.

You wouldn't have known the midfielder had spent the previous 90 minutes watching the match from the stands as he took a leaf out of John Terry's books by putting on his shorts, socks, shirt and boots during the parade of the trophy.

Skipper Terry became the butt of endless jokes after celebrating Chelsea's Champions League win over Bayern Munich in full kit in 2012, despite having missed the match through suspension.

Images of him went viral again just a year later as he celebrated their Europa League win in similar style despite being injured but, this time round, it was the turn of Serbia's Matic to strip off his suit.

"Matic made the speech in the dressing room expressing his pain not to be playing, and asking the players to express the pleasure he couldn't have to play this final," said Mourinho.

"For me, the pain was to see a player play yesterday [Barnes, for Burnley] and Matic not playing today."

Guess what Mrs M? We won.

As Chelsea's players came together in a jubilant huddle in the centre circle at the final whistle, manager Mourinho was conspicuous by his absence.

The Portuguese was on his mobile phone - prompting jokes on social media he was ringing his wife.

They were right. Mourinho explained afterwards he immediately phoned wife Matilde Faria to tell her the score.

And it isn't the first time he has done this - having left the dugout early during his side's 6-0 win over Arsenal to ring his wife to tell her the score in March 2014.

Party time - but not for long

It looked like the party was just starting as Chelsea's players and staff lapped up the adulation of the blue half of the Wembley crowd after lifting the trophy.

But if Jose Mourinho and midfielder Cesc Fabregas are to believed, that was the start and end of the celebrations.

"You are never too old to celebrate, you don't have enough trophies not to celebrate," said Mourinho. "For me this is 24 but I am like a kid with the first one.

"Now I blow kisses to everyone that is happy because we are happy, but this is quick, there is no time for big celebrations, let's go home. I have the hat-trick of League Cups and it is nice to have it. Museum, history, but we have to go on and chase another one."

Fabregas added: "We will stay here at Wembley for a while then get back on the bus to Stamford Bridge.

"But then we will get into our cars and go home to rest for Wednesday's game against West Ham. We want to win the Premier League too - maybe we can have a big party at the end of the season."

Jose on his backside

Mourinho didn't spare a moment's thought for his League Cup final suit as he threw himself down in celebration in front of his team on Sunday.

The Chelsea boss lay on his backside before getting up, punching the air and joining in with his squad on the as they bounced around the hastily erected on-pitch stage.

The Portuguese wasn't the only one who fell to the turf in joy as Chelsea's players performed the almost obligatory collective dive.

'I want to kill Silvino'

With Premier League title rivals Manchester City losing to Liverpool earlier in the day, you could understand the joy as Chelsea's bid to become champions was also given a huge boost.

But Mourinho admits he was desperate to avoid his squad finding out the result.

"The perfect day was to win the final. I prepared the players for an impossible mission, which was we don't want to know the Man City result. Forget Man City," Mourinho said.

"I knew that was an impossible mission, but I didn't want television in the hotel, in the bus.

"And we were successful on that. But one member of my staff jumped on the bus. Silvino. I want to kill the guy. The member of my staff broke the rule!"

Mourinho's man of the match? Andreas Christensen

Chelsea captain Terry was named the official man of the match at Wembley but Mourinho had different ideas.

"Man of the match? They are Thibaut Courtois and Filipe Luis, who played fantastic against Liverpool," he said.

"Man of the match was Andreas Christensen who played well against Shrewsbury. There are more than John Terry because we are a team. I am proud of the guys."
