Joselu has scored four goals for Stoke

Newcastle United have signed Stoke striker Joselu on a three-year contract for £5m.

The 27-year-old, who has played at Real Madrid, Celta Vigo and Hoffenheim, joined Stoke for £5.75m from German side Hannover 96 in June 2015.

Spaniard Joselu spent last season on loan at Deportivo La Coruna, scoring six goals in 24 games.

This is Magpies boss Rafael Benitez's sixth summer signing since the club were promoted to the Premier League.

"I feel very happy, because I have signed for a very big club," said Joselu.

Newcastle, who lost 2-0 to Tottenham on Sunday in their opening game of the season, have also signed defenders Florian Lejeune and Javier Manquillo and midfielders Mikel Merino, Christian Atsu and Jacob Murphy.

Former Spain Under-21 player Joselu, who made two appearances for Real Madrid, scored four goals in 27 appearances in his only season in the Premier League for Stoke.

Benitez added: "Obviously he has experience of English football and the Premier League. We think if we can exploit his full potential he will be a good signing for us.

"He knows and accepts the challenge we've given him at Newcastle and he's keen to come and fight for a position in the team."

    Ashley saying he can't compete with City or Chelsea and spend £200m on a player but no one is expecting him to. He just needs to compete with Stoke, Southampton, Bournemouth and West Brom instead of giving Rafa the same budget he would have at Tranmere Rovers.

    What can you do?. Rafa's hands are tied by The Big Fat One. Nothing will change until he sells the club, if ever. The man has a kind of schizo-megalomania thing going on. He seems to get his kicks by raising the fans hopes and then dashing them, time after time. No one is surprised, but we still turn up cause its the team, our team, our city and never will be his, Come rain or shine...Cue violins.

    Looking at our signings so far this summer, you can't say any of them (with perhaps the exception of Lejeune, who's already injured...typical...) are above distinctly average.

    And average won't be good enough in this league. it's very worrying.

    Hope they prove me wrong, though! Until the red card, the performance against Spurs was encouraging, if unspectacular.

    Gutted about this. He had an amazing pre-season for us, and I reckon he'll be monstrous for Newcastle! Congrats to the Toons on what I suspect will be a great deal

    I think people should trust Rafa's judgement. He's a champions league winner and did a good job getting the toon straight out of the Championship with a minimum of fuss (take note Villa). You don't have to spend £50m on players, you need the whole club to be pulling in the same direction. Good luck for the season (apart from Sunday)!

    I think Rafa should aim a bit higher. I know Ashley won't support him in the money stakes but this is a poor deal I reckon.
    Rafa had a habbit of getting young foreign (mainly Spanish) talent before they hit their peak (Garcia, Alonso, Torres, Mascherano et al). He needs to get his scout back.

    decent signing. Rafa knows what he's doing and so far he hasn't failed us. He is doing the best with what little Ashley will give him. Perez is a far better signing and only 7.5m more. Ashley won't pay that. Board keeps saying Rafa wants too much. This won't end well. For Newcastle or Rafa staying in charge. He has spent about 10m after transfer sales.

    Glad we have made this signing, but don't think he would have been anywhere near the top of Rafa's wish list. Worrried to see how dis-engaged Rafa seemed in his post-match interview after Spurs. Can see him walking mid-season and referencing lack of financial support in the transfer window as the main reason.

    the best signings add quality to the starting 11... not fill spaces to fatten the squad... 6 in 24.. hardly the stats of a striker.

    he had an average first season with stoke, i only saw him live once , at leicester, and he nearly scored. a lot of foreign players struggle in their first season in the prem. and he actually played quite well in spain last season, so surely people can give him a chance, after all he is better than the 32 year old daryl murphy who he is replacing. i think the geordies will give him that chance.

    I think this will be a great signing. Stoke are a fantastic club and it's a shame to see him leave. Being a magpie supporter I'm pleased we have not paid silly prices for someone with great potential. Rafa is a great manager and will get the best out of the team. I'd like us to compete against all clubs and start bringing through British players from the youth academy.

    Wouldn't have been Rafa's first choice but he's still a Rafa signing, not someone who hasn't been scouted properly e.g. Rivière. Going into the season with two strikers is a recipe for disaster so at least this replaces Murphy in terms of numbers. He is tall and Stoke fans have said he has done well in pre season. Fingers crossed, get behind the team!!

    @61 loving the banter. However Newcastle can't afford Messi and Ronaldo due to FFP. Chelsea / MC or MU might be able to afford that? Due to their thick brown envelopes posted under officials doors at various times in the year.

    See here's the thing I think a lot of people are forgetting. And that's in regards to ffp. We have a lot of positions to strengthen and we haven't made the money of transfers that we did last year. So we've obviously got to be a bit careful with who we sign and how much we spend on one player as not to fail ffp regulations. If Rafa thinks Joselu and others can do a job for us then I trust him.

    This doesn't bode at all well for Mitrovic but he has only himself to blame. It's gonna be a tough 9 months for us. I want to go back to the championship anyway. Better fans, better away trips and games that we can win. It is supposed to be entertainment after all. HTL.
