Robert Snodgrass: West Ham winger is told he can leave the club

Snodgrass was left out of West Ham's squad for their Premier League opener at Manchester United on Sunday

West Ham have told Scotland midfielder Robert Snodgrass that he can leave the London club, either on a permanent basis or on loan.

The Hammers signed the 29-year-old from Hull City in January for £10.2m on a three-and-a-half year deal.

But after scoring seven goals in 20 matches for Hull, Snodgrass failed to score in 15 Premier League appearances for West Ham last season.

Sunderland boss Simon Grayson said he is interested in signing Snodgrass.

"When people like him become available you would be foolish not to consider it," said Grayson, who managed the Scot at Leeds, on Friday.

"That would be a deal dictated by finances. Can we do it? Who knows, but we might ask the question."

Former Norwich player Snodgrass has been capped 24 times.

    He was superb at Hull but West Ham never felt like a natural fit when the deal was announced. I'm not surprised at this and it's a sign of the times that 10 million quid is a figure that can just effectively be written off.

    There must be some major behind the scenes madness going on here. Get him playing with a bit of form then he's a class act; didn't seem to get the chance at West Ham.

    Can't help but think that West Ham signed this guy in order to make it more likely that Hull would go down and hence they would stay up. Always impressed against us when he played for Hull, but has never been given a chance. Very fishy.

    Weird.

    Writing off £10 million? Easy if you got your stadium for buttons.

    Thought he was a decent player at Hull but never seemed to get a fair crack of the whip at West Ham.

    Either Billic or whoever is in charge of transfers need serious criticism over this. Totally wasteful and mad situation. He's a good player, at worst a squad one off the bench at that level. He hasn't gone bad overnight.

    Not sure I'd sanction signings to a manager who acts like that.
