Kieran Trippier suffered an injury scare before the current Premier League season

Tottenham defender Kieran Trippier is the second player to be ruled out of England's World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovakia because of injury.

The 26-year-old right-back missed training with his international squad this week and has returned to his club.

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford also pulled out of Gareth Southgate's squad after picking up a muscle problem during Saturday's defeat by Chelsea.

The England manager has not called up replacements for the pair.

England play Malta away on Friday before hosting Slovakia on 4 September.

Pickford is yet to make his senior international debut but he was on the bench for England's World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Scotland in October and November 2016.

Defender Phil Jones and midfielders Jake Livermore and Nathaniel Chalobah were all involved in training on Thursday after sitting out earlier sessions because of minor injuries.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was also involved in the session, before the announcement of his transfer deadline day switch from Arsenal to Liverpool.

    Please please please please please now put Butland in goal! Please not Joe Hart. His head has gone, I'd still have him in the squad for experience but not in goal for an important game. I like Joe Hart and feel sad the way his career has gone but I guess there's no room for sentiment

    I think pickford is the best keeper weve got, he'll probably be number 1 for years to come.

    It doesn't matter anyway as Southgate will obviously still pick Joe Hart..pfft why o why are we still picking Hart?
    It's frightening really how blind these managers are. There are at least three better keepers now in Butland, Heaton and Pickford and better by some distance too.

    The fact that there was four keepers in the line up is utterly ridiculous anyway.

    Drop Joe Hart as well. Play Butland with Forster as a back up and bring in a few more young, in form midfielders to spice up the bench and add a different dynamic.

    Gutted. He is in great form & has the potential to be world class if he gets the experience. Everton are going to do well this year because the whole team is lifted by the fact their keeper is going to make match winning saves. He will be worth 12+points to Everton this year. WIth experience he will make the same impact for England. Just 5 saves other keepers would miss can mean up to 15 points!

    Shame for Pickford but not sure why we needed 4 keepers in the squad for 2 qualifiers in the 1st place. Hopefully Southgate will call up an outfield player as a replacement.

    A 'muscle' injury hey? English players seem to have such bad luck getting injured before international friendlies or qualifiers. I wonder if he'll be back in time for Evertons next fixture...

    Hart - no command of the box, distribution slow and inaccurate, panics when attackers approach, touch, at best, dodgy, regularly prone to errors. England no 1. Pe..lease?

    Nice genuine guy, yes. But that doesn't win you matches.

    33. According to Saints fans Forster's performances have dropped since 2 15-16 season. I'd go with Butland in goal and Heaton as backup now Pickford is out. Hart has conceded 10 this season and didn't have the best time at Torino.
