Championship leaders Leeds beat Premier League Burnley 5-3 on penalties after an entertaining draw in the Carabao Cup third round at Turf Moor.

The visitors seemed to be heading for victory when Pablo Hernandez converted a penalty four minutes into injury time to put them 2-1 up.

But a sublime Robbie Brady free-kick dramatically restored parity.

After a nervy extra time, Burnley's James Tarkowski was denied by Andy Lonergan as Leeds held their nerve.

An evenly fought contest, with Burnley enjoying the majority of chances, came to life 10 minutes from the end of normal time.

Hadi Sacko fired home from close range after a burst from substitute Hernandez to give the away side the lead.

But Chris Wood, who moved to Burnley from Leeds for a club record fee of about £15m in August, wiped out the lead with a 89th-minute penalty following Gaetano Berardi's foul on Kevin Long.

Hernandez then scored from the spot after Kemar Roofe was held back, but Brady's curling effort extended a rollercoaster encounter in extra time.

The competition is a testing ground for the new 'ABBA' format of penalty shoot-out with Leeds' opening effort - emphatically converted by Pierre-Michel Lasogga - followed by each side taking two in succession.

But the visitors were not thrown in the slightest by the new arrangement.

Hernandez repeated his normal-time success before Mateusz Klich rolled in a nerveless side-foot effort.

Leeds completed a full house of successful penalties when Stuart Dallas followed Ezgjan Alioski in finding the net to give Burnley no chance to recover from Lonergan's save.

Lonergan, who returned for a second stint at Elland Road on a free transfer from Wolves in August, was making his first appearance of the season having playing second fiddle to German Felix Wiedwald so far.

What's next

Leeds, who suffered their first league defeat of the season to Millwall at the weekend, take on fifth-placed Ipswich on Saturday.

The club are aiming to return to the top flight for the first time since being relegated in 2004.

Burnley, who lie seventh in the Premier League, face more Yorkshire opposition in Huddersfield on Saturday.

Irrelevant, not been world beaters for a long time but proper club,real fans and an old time good stadium not franchised.
Who does everyone want in the away end, 200 burnley fans or 2000 Leeds ?

Super Leeds! Actually not that bothered about a cup run. The league is our top priority. I'd love us to go up. I'd usually be saying that all/any silverware is important, but promotion is the ultimate. I really enjoyed last nights game. It was a proper scrap. What an ending! Marching On Together!

Clubs like Forest, Leeds and Derby County have played a massive part in our relatively recent footballing heritage. As a toon fan starved of success we could only dream of what they have achieved as clubs.
It will be great to see big bad leeds back in the premiership, please get your act together in the board room and stop selling your best players.

Leeds looking good, it could be their year finally. They've been excellent since they let Wood come to us and he has already got us some valuable points, so a good deal all round. A very good match for 2 sides playing weakened teams.

@63, good post but we do now have our act together in the boardroom. Wood only went because he really wanted to and in truth we're not missing him. Our squad is as strong as its been since we were a force in the EPL.

Once again a Championship side proving that the Premiership (apart from the usual suspects - Manchesters, Chelsea, Spurs, etc) are nothing special. Just over paid players playing for teams with crowds lower than the leagues below them. Let's hope Leeds will soon be rejoining the usual suspects in the next few years.

As a LUFC fan of over 50 years I am genuinely if cautiously optimistic this season. Real promise, shame about the Millwall game but beating Prem opposition can only be a confidence boost.

Maybe after all the hurt this could be THE season.

Woods will regret his decision to move as we may well cross over in May

A real gutsy performance from Leeds especially as we rested all our 1st team players bar the brilliant Luke Ayling. We may not get much further in the cup if we keep doing that but i don't care, it's important for all the squad to get game time.
