Dele Alli scored his third goal of the season for Spurs

Dele Alli scored the winning goal as Tottenham edged out Barnsley to reach the Carabao Cup fourth round in front of a Wembley crowd of just 23,926.

Alli struck from six yards out in the second half following excellent work by full-back Kieran Trippier.

Striker Fernando Llorente, making his first Spurs start, headed wide from a promising position in the first half.

Championship Barnsley had chances but Liam Lindsay headed wide and Ike Ugbo struck straight at Michel Vorm.

Spurs spared more Wembley woe

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino said before the game that prioritising domestic cups over the Premier League or Champions League would be "a big mistake".

But the Argentine fielded a strong starting line-up, containing Alli, Jan Vertonghen and Mousa Dembele, with top scorer Harry Kane on the bench.

Pochettino's apparent lack of enthusiasm for the competition was shared by Spurs supporters, with the 90,000-seater national stadium less than one-third full.

Spurs had won just one game - against Borussia Dortmund - at Wembley all season, and this game looked like being another one that would slip away from them.

Debutant Juan Foyth should have scored in the opening minutes, but nodded off target with a free header, and Alli headed wide from Harry Winks' chipped pass into the box.

But England international Alli netted on 65 minutes as Spurs claimed their 18th win from their past 19 home League Cup games against sides from a lower division.

Brave Barnsley can take heart

Paul Heckingbottom's Barnsley are struggling at the wrong end of the Championship after collecting just seven points from their opening seven league games.

In their last game, they were thumped 3-0 by Aston Villa, leaving them three points above the relegation zone.

But they can take heart from an impressive showing against one of the Premier League's best sides and should have gone ahead through Lindsay and on-loan Chelsea forward Ugbo.

The South Yorkshire side face another tough game on Saturday when they travel to Molineux to face promotion-challenging Wolves.

    Tottenham have the best selection of center backs and defensive midfielders in the league. Vertonghen, Foyth, Alderweireld, Sanchez, Wanyama and Dier give Spurs so many defensive options and that is what makes them the most defensively formidable side in the league. Not forgetting that they also have Lloris in goals and Aurier, Rose, Davies and Trippier covering the full back positions

    I see stats are flying about.... lovely :-) & about Spurs at Wembley!

    Arsenal's record attendance is..... 60,161 - 3rd Nov 2007.

    Tottenham's record attendance is (we can give you the 24,000 & some odd yesterday and you still can't beat us, hehe) .... 85,512 - 2nd Nov 2016.

    Only one third full? I think you will find half of it was closed. Capacity was around 40-45k for this match, making it more like half.

    Oh and @1, 65,000 were at the more important game v Swansea at the weekend, more then the capacity at the new ground. So yes, they will come.

    Strange comments about the crowd size. That was Spurs' third home game in 6 days. Total attendance 160,000+. Not a bad turn out to a ground that is not your home ground. Barnsley on a Tuesday night is not exactly a big draw. I've been to a couple of the home games at Wembley and although it's modern and has great facilities its not same as going to WHL or as easy to get to for regulars. COYS

    This is spurs 3rd wembley game in the last week,i doubt many can be bothered with the early rounds of this competition.They are averaging over 68k for the first 3 prem games which is the 2nd highest behind united

    It's pretty obvious why attendances are low in this competition as it is seen as irrelevant to the majority of clubs, fans and players.
    The only redeeming feature is that it gives clubs from the lower leagues the opportunity to challenge Premier League teams (albeit with weakened sides).
    When Spurs play Real Madrid the Stadium will be full.

    Don't see why 24k is being laughed at. Palace only had 6k and villa 11k. Thought it was a decent crowd considering Wembley is a pain to get to for the majority of our fan base and it's the least important game of the many that fans will pay out to go to in the next few weeks.

    Fans poking fun from other clubs I hope you went to ur league cup ties? I was at Wembley despite the 3hr round trip.

    Typical BBC headline once again - 24k at WHL wouldn't have made the headline but 24k at Wembley does..... Strange how so many people not there know what the 'real' attendance was..!! Club Wembley was empty..... Perhaps we should have invited 20,000 Germans over to boost the attendance....

So the attendance for a home league cup game against Barnsley was 24k? Who cares?! I'm certain for our next home league it will be 60k+ again.

    #28, im sure Bournemouth would get more than 24000 if there stadium allowed but with a capacity of 11360 i think they find it pretty hard to get to 24K ,

    A win a win. But pouch needs to sort out the lack off attacking ideas. Still think we will regret letting jassen go on loan and not signing a player who can beat a player.

    I agree, we need a player who can go past at pace like Pedro at Chelsea. Our system works except against packed defences which the lessor teams will all employ
