Everton: David Unsworth wants job full-time after Ronald Koeman's sacking

'Who wouldn't want the Everton job?' - Unsworth

Everton's caretaker boss David Unsworth says he wants the job on a full-time basis.

The club's Under-23 manager was placed in temporary charge on Tuesday, a day after Ronald Koeman's dismissal.

"Who wouldn't want the job?" the former Everton defender, 44, said. "I want to manage and this is an amazing club to be manager of. I make no secret of it."

Ryan Giggs has also put himself in the frame for the job and BBC Sport understands Phil Neville is interested.

Unsworth, who also had a previous spell as caretaker boss after Roberto Martinez left the club last season, will take charge of Wednesday's trip to Chelsea in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

"The chairman has given me an opportunity to hopefully get a run of games where hopefully performance levels go up," he added. "From that, performances will dictate any future for me as Everton manager.

"We had a great session this morning, the players were fine, they were buzzing. The players reacted straight away."

The Merseyside club sacked Koeman after a 5-2 loss at home to Arsenal on Sunday left them in the Premier League relegation zone, with just eight points from nine matches.

Asked what the problems have been this season, Unsworth said: "We'll all have our opinions and look at individuals or formations but the bottom line is we haven't won enough games.

"The commitment to the cause has been there but it's a collective thing."

'Everton look like a group of players, not a team'

BBC Match of the Day pundit Neville has previously spoken about his desire to manage a club full-time.

The former England international, 40, made more than 250 appearances for Everton in eight years at the club. He was previously assistant manager at La Liga side Valencia and was reportedly keen to take overexternal-link at Goodison Park following David Moyes' departure in 2013.

He went on to act as first-team coach at former club Manchester United in 2013 alongside Moyes and Giggs, before leaving in 2014. He began his role at Valencia in July 2015 but left the clubexternal-link a year later.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche and former Bayern Munich manager Carlo Ancelotti have been linked with the Goodison Park vacancy.

'I would love Ross Barkley to stay'

Unsworth was also asked about midfielder Ross Barkley, who has been sidelined with hamstring injury since mid-August and is out of contract at the end of the season.

Barkley was linked with Chelsea over the summer and says he will "assess all my options in January when fully fit".

And Unsworth is hoping he can persuade the 23-year-old England international to stay.

"I would love him to stay," said Unsworth "He is a top talent. Everton has done great for him, and he has done great for Everton. He could be one of the all-time greats here.

"I would love him to be persuaded by myself and the chairman to stay and sign a contract."
