Former club captain Barry Ferguson says the Rangers board are taking too long to name a new manager.

The Ibrox outfit sacked Pedro Caixinha on 26 October and interim boss Graeme Murty this week said an appointment would be "good for all involved".

"I'm a Rangers fan first and foremost, I'm frustrated, disappointed," Ferguson told BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound.

"Now I know it's an important appointment, but four weeks is far too long."

Following the sacking of Caixinha after seven months in charge, under-20s coach Murty has once again stepped in to take charge of the first-team.

He guided the Ibrox men to wins over Hearts and Partick Thistle but lost at home to Hamilton Academical last week.

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes has been linked with the vacant post at Ibrox, but Dons chairman Stewart Milne says he is going nowhere.

"It came up to the international break and I really thought to myself, this is the time to go and appoint a Derek McInnes, for instance, and nothing's happened," Ferguson added.

"Nothing's come out from the board. Nobody says a word and I feel sorry for the fans.

"These fans, when Rangers went down to League Two, paid a hell of a lot of money for season books and turned out in force. They still turn out in force and the board decide not to say a word.

"If Derek was the first choice, which I think he should be, he would want to change a lot of things and I don't know if that's possible at Rangers.

"I think it's got to be somebody who knows the club, who knows the traditions and the expectations at Rangers.

"A guy like Derek McInnes deserves his chance. He's done a good job at Aberdeen. He came up when they were fighting relegation and they are now the second force."

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd agrees that the club should have appointed a new manager before now.

Boyd reckons McInnes should be the top target but thinks the Aberdeen manager will be "getting pretty annoyed" by the delay.

"I think everyone to a man has said that Derek McInnes is the preferred candidate to replace Pedro Caixinha," Boyd told Sportsound.

"But I don't think there's been any discussions and they have a double header next week and, if it is not done by then, I don't think Derek McInnes will be anywhere near Ibrox.

"If you are going to get rid of somebody, make sure you have somebody in place.

"Rangers had been underperforming for months and they should have been further forward before Caixinha left.

"There was a big outcry when Jim McIntyre left Ross County, but fair play to Roy MacGregor, he went straight out and got Owen Coyle within three days. That's the way proper businesses are run.

"Even if Derek McInnes is offered the job, is it guaranteed he is going to take it?"

    Is it a simple case that wee Barry is frustrated, that he hasn't been considered for the job. Personally I think he'd be fantastic for the job. He has all the credentials, he's currently out of work, has a pair of brown brogues, has experience of EBT's, never achieved anything in previous management roles.     Deluded idiots! What will it take for them to realise the overspending old Rangers are never coming back. This delusion of liqidation being a mere flesh wound and not THE fatal death blow is the reason for their current sorry plight. Accept the reality which should have been the case in 2012 build the new club up and maybe one day they will be worthy and better respected rivals to other clubs.

    As a Rangers fan I'm seriously bored of ex players spouting off that we need a manager and the board to conduct their daily dealings through the media! All Ferguson is trying to do is sell his Daily Record.

    We need to be prudent as we do not have the money/investment. It is a slow process. Its the 2nd year in the SPL!

    Its exacerbated by the fact that Celtic are doing well.

    McInnes is better than that. Win a Scottish cup, wait for a decent job in England with a vaguely sain owner/chairman and every Dons fans would wish him well. He has been fantastic for the club. The Ibrox job is toxic and everyone in Scottish football knows it. It would put a massive black mark on his CV and he doesnt need that at the moment.

    The only "people to a man" touting McInnes for a position, he has not been approached about, are ex Rangers players/sympathisers - because BBC are banned from Ibrox, they rely on these nearly men to spout their pro Rangers propaganda. Why do you not report that Rangers cannot afford McInnes, should they even see him as a candidate, as they are nearing liquidation once more.

    The Stewart Milne statement last night could only have been released with the backing of McInnes.

    He's not interested in the madness of RFC.

    Get used to Murty. He's the best Rangers can attract, with the possible exception of 'Mr Desperate Alex McLeish'.

    Coleman saying no is incredible.

    Either way RFC are finishing 4th at best. Maybe a blessing after this years European exploits.

    Souness, Advocaat and McLeish all owe Rangers millions of pounds from untaxed "loans" in lieu of payment.
    Surely they could all chip in for free ?
    Or perhaps they would explain that it was a different club which employed them all those years ago.

    The irony of all this is that Rangers are doing quick fixes in an attempt to win the league yet are actually putting themselves into the exact same position as they were 5/6 years ago. SPFL changed the rules to get them into premier league as quickly as possible yet messed it up first time and as soon as they get back in they are targeting player/coaches from the team closest to Celtic (ie A'deen)

    'The traditions and expectations' are the undoing of the tribute act. They have no traditions - they are 5 years old. That is a fact and no amount of varying opinions will alter it - only time, i.e. next year they will be a 6 year old club. The board cannot afford McInnes and the BBC should stop broadcasting the views of EBT recipients who fail to understand that the club they played is no more.

    Boyd is commenting on the club at Ibrox every week but should he not be concentrating on Kilmarnock FC? And BBC - get Tom English off the airwaves (let him write but not speak), use Michael Stewart less (he's good but too much of anything is a bad thing) and increase the budget on Sportscene to £7.50 an episode. Along with Sky you are doing your bit to kill our game.
