Luke Shaw: Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho promises defender more games

Luke Shaw became one of the world's most expensive teenagers when he joined Manchester United for £27m from Southampton in June 2014

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw marked his first start since April with a "very positive performance", said manager Jose Mourinho.

Shaw, 22, helped United beat CSKA Moscow 2-1 at Old Trafford to reach the Champions League knockout stage for the first time since 2014.

The £27m signing played the full game having previously been limited to 48 minutes of action this season.

"He was really dangerous," said Mourinho after Tuesday's match.

Mourinho had told Shaw to "change his football brain" in April and the former Southampton full-back produced an impressive performance, although he was culpable for the away side's opener, failing to track Mario Fernandes' burst into the box.

However, Mourinho was upbeat after Shaw's first start in a United shirt since 30 April.

"He was deserving that opportunity for a long time and is going to get more because his performance was really positive," added the Portuguese.

"He had a great intensity in his game, it was no surprise that after minute 80 he was feeling the consequences of that intensity. It is normal for his first match of season."

    Interesting to hear Paul Scholes compare Shaw to Rooney with regard to their body type and the manner in which they look after themselves away from the pitch. He said that he thinks Shaw is the type of player who needs to be playing every game in order to maintain fitness levels and I am inclined to agree. IMO Shaw should take a leaf out of Harry Kane's book re professionalism in a young player

    I thought it was fine. Mourinho only wants certain characters and I think he was challenging Shaw to see if he has what it takes, a bit like he did with Martial. I have a feeling he's going to react well from it. Good man management.

    Shaw showed amazing talent 2 years ago, just before he had that awful leg break, which was enough to finish a player for good. I was really happy to see him have his best game in 2 years last night. I know Young will start the big games for now but I hope we keep Shaw because if he gets back to his best he’s great.
    The people who’ve just come on here to troll... I pity your poor rotten souls.

    Shaw playing well gives Mourinho options - keep him fit, hungry and motivated as an option for the rest of the season. Or fatten (fitten?) him up ready for sale in January. Either way more games for Shaw playing well is good for United. And for Shaw - he can leave ready for a new start elsewhere or stay and fight for his (England?) place. Smart management Jose.

    ManU under van Gaal or Moyes would have folded after that opening goal by CSKA, and, most like, struggled to a draw or suffered a defeat. That they were able to come back and win the game relatively comfortably shows that they have advanced considerably. Whether they can match the performances that City are putting together is a bit of a stretch (& I'm a Utd supporter, just realistic).

    Shaw is a quality player. He just needs to play regularly and stay injury free. Could even make world cup if gets enough games under his belt

    Luke Shaw is NOT a flop, he is NOT injury prone, nor is he a bad player.He suffered an horrific injury where is leg was snapped in two and his ankle dislocated. Before that incident he had played at a high standard at Southampton which got him his move to Manchester United.He then was playing very well and getting a lot of praise before a bad tackle.Mourinho said he should play through pain=idiot

    As good as Young is playing, a right footed left back is going to make the team narrow.
    A left footed left full back can make runs around the left winger, and left footed left wing back can get as close to the line as possible to create space and width.
    Give LS a chance if his attitude is good, or go and buy Rose from Spurs.

    So nothing to do with his injuries, his terrible attitude to training and diet (which has been confirmed by 3 managers at United and 2 from England) or anything else no?

    Also he's been at United 3.5yrs and Jose has only been there 1.5. So how is it Jose's fault?

    Also those who are slagging off JM for his criticism of Shaw seem to forget that LVG did the same
    He rose to the challenge before his horrific injury & theres no reason why he cant again he obviously has the right attitude

    It is easy to forget the appalling injury Shaw had - his leg was properly broken with his foot pointing 180 degrees in the wrong direction. I don't like mourinho rubbishing players publically but hopefully this is the right type of motivation for Shaw. I for one hope he gets to where his potential suggests he can be. He certainly looked up for it last night and did pretty well.

    I hope Shaw does well he deserves it after his injuries. He had so much promise earlier in his career. I think having powerful attacking fullbacks is certainly the way forward for most teams:

    Shaw isn't playing.If a player is playing badly then fans can criticise.If a player IS NOT playing at all then what makes them a bad player?We aren't watching them play so what proof do you have they are bad? People say Lukaku, De Bruyne, Salah were bad at Chelsea - NO they weren't being picked. "Zaha flopped at Man U" NO he played 4 games-how can you judge-MOYES WAS HIS MANAGER - SAYS IT ALL
