Van Gaal spent heavily over the summer bringing in a number of highly talented players, only to repeatedly ignore calls to add to the crumbling defence he inherited beyond Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind – both of whom more predominantly feature in other positions.

However, CaughtOffside understands that his scouting network has brought up a list of names that sees the 26-year-old placed firmly at the top.

The 6’3 hard man has been a mainstay in the side ever since joining from Brazilian outfit Nacional in 2009, and he has gone on to make 135 appearances whilst in Portugal, scoring nine goals.

His fearless facing of opposition strikers has made him one of the toughest customers to come up against in the Portuguese top flight and his goal record when going forward has made him seem a very attractive proposition for the Dutchman.

Having first feared that he would be priced out of a move for him, Van Gaal has been buoyed by the news that Porto would be willing to open discussions over a move with the price set at just £6m.

United will now keep an eye on his progress between now and January before deciding whether to put together a package to try and bring him on board in the new year.
