Arsenal COULD have stopped United from winning the treble…

Arsene Wenger has admitted that he is still haunted by Ryan Giggs’ famous FA Cup strike against Arsenal for Manchester United in 1999.

The Welshman knocked out the Gunners in tournament that year with an incredible run that saw him travel with the ball for almost half of the pitch, avoiding a number of challenges before smashing a goal past David Seaman from a tight angle.

The strike, which settled the FA Cup semi-final at Villa Park after Dennis Bergkamp’s penalty had earlier been saved by Peter Schmeichel, allowed United to go on and win a historic treble of trophies.

“That goal decided their season, 1999 was a miracle for United,” said Arsene Wenger, reports Daily Star.

“I think that goal won them the Treble because if Dennis Bergkamp scores a penalty for us I think the game is over.

“It was a trauma for us in a negative way and for them it was a positive. Bergkamp never again wanted to take a penalty and it put them on the road to the Treble.

“I can still hear the shouts of that team, having won – they couldn’t believe it because they were down to ten men. And I think that put them just on the up.

Wenger’s comments come ahead of another FA Cup tie between the Arsenal and United with their FA Cup quarter-final clash at Old Trafford on Monday.

Many have said United have looked a shade of their former selves under new manager Louis van Gaal but Wenger is not so quick to  pass judgement.

“It’s too early to say that – I think they are still a strong side. You go there and I don’t expect any weakness from Man United,” said Wenger.

“I know that if we want to qualify we have to produce a strong performance, as they have lost just two games in the last 22.

“We know they have a little advantage. They play at home, where they feel confident. So to compensate for that we have to put more effort in and produce a really top-level performance.”
