Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger makes transfer statement after West Ham defeat

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that he won’t be tempted to panic buy after the Gunners’ loss to West Ham, reports Sky Sports [via Daily Express].

The 65-year-old saw his team defeated by goals from Cheikhou Kouyate and Mauro Zarate in a performance littered with errors made by his players. However, this doesn’t seem to have been enough to make him consider dipping back in to the transfer market before the window closes in September.

“West Ham were a bit ahead of us because they had played many competitive games and preparation is preparation, you never get that same intensity,” said Wenger.

“But overall, well done West Ham and we have to keep our focus and it’s just the start of the season and I am convinced we will respond well to that accident.

“When you don’t win a game buy buy buy, we bought and we still lost the game today, we listen to people but as well we have to focus on the quality of our performance.”

The Gunners have only bought Petr Cech so far this summer, and it was the 33-year-old who was at fault for both of the goals they conceded on Sunday. Fans will be hoping that this dismal opening performance was just a blip, and not a sign of a wider decline in the legendary stopper’s abilities.

Other players have been linked with moves to the Emirates Stadium this summer, with Real Madrid ace Karim Benzema being heavily tipped for a move to the Emirates Stadium [Daily Mail]. The Frenchman could have been a valuable addition in the north London side’s opening Premier League match, as the team found it difficult to break down Slaven Bilic’s well-marshalled outfit.

There have been doubts in the past over Olivier Giroud’s ability to spearhead a Premier League title-chasing side [Daily Telegraph], while Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck have never been used regularly or particularly effectively as central strikers. This means that a move for the Merengues forward could make sense for the Gunners, despite Wenger’s insistence that buying more players won’t make a difference.
