After failing to spend any significant money on transfers in the last two transfer windows, Arsenal have fallen to a mere third place in the Premier League despite most of the historically top clubs struggling to just tread water. But with significant funds set aside for him, Arsene Wenger plans to use some of it this summer to improve the club.
Per ESPN FC, Arsene Wenger said in a Tuesday news conference that ‘money will be available’ for the team to use on transfer targets this summer. The Daily Telegraph noted that the Arsenal board will give Wenger about £75 million to spend at the end of the season.
“I think if we want to buy at the end of the season, money will be available,” Wenger said. “But at the moment we want to influence our performances and results. The money, until the end of the season will not help us.”
The Gunners spent just £17 million on their top two transfer acquisitions from the summer and winter combined (£10 million for Petr Cech, £7 million for Mohamed Elneny).
In the 2013 summer transfer window, Arsenal acquired Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid for £42.5 million. The following year they landed Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona for a similar deal.
