Arsenal and Liverpool given boost in pursuit of £36m French wonderkid

Arsenal and Liverpool have been given a fresh boost in their hopes of signing Jean-Michael Serri.

The Nice midfielder has been linked with a move to Barcelona, which has now fallen through according to reports in Spain.

According to Metro, Arsenal and Liverpool will now attempt to sign the French wonderkid.

Seri made a big impression last season as Nice took the French league by storm.

Barcelona were thought to be leading the race to sign Seri, and personal terms were agreed to take him to the Nou Camp. The player has a £36m release clause allowing him to leave the French club.

Yet, their interest has cooled since signing Brazilian midfielder Paulinho, giving Arsenal and Liverpool the chance to secure the Ivory Coast international.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger remains interested in making an “exceptional signing”, and said yesterday, ” I am very pleased with our market because we bought good players who can integrate with our style of play.”

“That’s what we want. On the other hand, it is very difficult. Today, the prices are out of proportion. The transfer market has become very demanding today.”

“There is no transfer market anymore because the price depends only on the identity of the buyer and when you are English, you have straight away 50 per cent (extra) on the price of a player and that makes it difficult to act.”
