Liverpool target Virgil Van Dijk reportedly held talks with Premier League rivals Chelsea this summer, with the talks taking place before the player handed in a transfer request at the Saints, according to the Daily Star.

Is it reported by the Irish Independent that both Manchester City and Chelsea had held talks with the Netherlands international before the player handed in a transfer request this summer, with Van Dijk talking to both the Premier League clubs without permission from his club Southampton.

Van Dijk has emerged as one of the best defenders in England these past few years, with all three aforementioned clubs being linked with moves for the Saints star before last season ended, report the Daily Star, however the south coast sides’s reluctancy to sell means a deal for Van Dijk hasn’t been agreed by any club yet.

Liverpool were forced to apologise to Southampton earlier this summer after the Saints accused the Reds of making an illegal approach for the player, with Chelsea and Man City both adopting a similar approach to Liverpool over fears they might be reported to the FA as well, write the Daily Star.

Should Van Dijk get his way and secure a move away from St Mary’s this summer, it’ll be worthwhile seeing which Premier League giant gets their hands on the highly-rated Dutch international.
