Can they keep him?

Schalke are reportedly ready to make Leon Goretzka the highest paid player in their history in order to prevent him sealing a free transfer to Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United or other top clubs.

The Germany international is attracting plenty of interest ahead of the summer, when he looks set to be a free agent after refusing to sign a new deal with his current club.

Liverpool, Chelsea and United are among those chasing Goretzka, while Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Manchester City are also said to be major contenders, according to Sport Bild.

The 22-year-old looks one of Europe’s most promising young midfielders at the moment, having been a Schalke regular since the 2013/14 season.

Goretzka is also really establishing himself at international level at the moment, with an incredible six goals in his last four appearances for Germany.

Sport Bild claim Schalke are desperate to tie Goretzka down to a new deal, with the club offering him around 8 millon euros a year to stay on.

Still, with so many tempting offers likely to come his way, it remains to be seen if the youngster can be persuaded to stick it out with his current club or move on to bigger things as he looks to fulfill his enormous potential.

Options for Leon Goretzka…

Liverpool could certainly give Goretzka a key role at Anfield next season, with worries of a free transfer of their own as Emre Can struggles to agree a new contract, according to the Daily Star.

Chelsea, meanwhile, could do with a creative player as a long-term replacement for Cesc Fabregas, who has been in and out of the first-team under Antonio Conte.

As Sport Bild notes, Barcelona also look in need of that kind of signing as they eye a new star playmaker to eventually replace club veteran Andres Iniesta.
