“He did it on purpose” – Liverpool man slams Man Utd ace after contentious incident

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has revealed his belief that Man Utd striker Romelu Lukaku deliberately kicked him in the head on Saturday.

Lukaku will face no action over the incident as it was seemingly an accidental collision between the pair at Anfield at the weekend with the United forward’s trailing heel catching the defender on the side of his head.

However, Lovren doesn’t go along with that, as seen in the video below from the press conference ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Maribor in the Champions League, as he believes that the Belgian international could have avoided making contact with his head but instead continued his momentum and struck him.

Further, he also picked up on his behaviour after the incident, as he claims that he was “nervous during the game” and didn’t apologise, thus giving him the impression that he knew what he had done.

“I made a tackle there, I felt he was over me and he could move away but to be honest my point of view is that he did it on purpose,” Lovren said. “Even if he did it normally he would apologise after that but I saw that he was nervous during the game so maybe that was also the reason [why he didn’t apologise].”

With neither referee Martin Atkinson nor the FA taking any action, the matter is effectively closed. However, debate will rage on and supporters will undoubtedly clash as Lovren has seemingly reignited the contentious talking point.

What is for certain though is that Lukaku will be keen to put Saturday’s game behind him as having failed to have a positive influence in another big game, he was unable to silence his critics who continue to point to his poor record against the top six sides in recent years where he has struggled to make a big impact.

That aside though, Lovren believes he got away with one here…
